CrisisCommons taking part in bi-national experiment

CrisisCommons is collaborating with other volunteer technical communities, NGOs and official agencies on both sides of the US-Canada border as part of the Digital Volunteer-Supported Recovery Operations Experiment or DVSROE (#dvsroe on twitter).  The DVSROE is focused on supporting response and recovery efforts on the East Coast seaboard following a simulated hurricane. It will run from Nov. 18-20 from Halifax, New Hampshire and other areas in North America.

Social media and technology will play a key part in the experiment. CrisisCommons’ role is to help provide access to, and liaise with, VTCs and digital volunteers to help speed up recovery and response. Our group will work closely with Virtual Operations Support Teams (VOSTs) on both sides of the Canada-US border.

In Canada, die CanVOST is leading the way in terms of digital volunteer support and in the US, a Nashua (N.H.)-based team (which will be supported by a national ad-hodall starVOST originating from the IAEM conference in San Antonio, Texas), will lead the way.

The social media component (the DVSROE) is one of components of a much bigger emergency management experiment called CAUSE III.  For more information on the CAUSE III experiment, see this blog post.

We will provide feedback and a retrospective look at the experiment and the contribution of CrisisCommons following the conclusion of the DVSROE.

  • Stand By Taskforce has been activated von UN-OCHA durch mindestens November. 10.
  • A group at Geek List has been tasked by the Philippine Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office as well as by NGO on the ground to develop a number of projects. Right now they seem to have a good core of developers and are looking for project leaders, social media help, design help and, of course, more developers. Here’s the list of active projects and there is more info here they also have an open chatroom.

Showcasing the role of social media and digital volunteers in the response to Superstorm Sandy

The members of the Department of Homeland Ssecurity’s Virtual Social Media Working Group and First Responders Group recently issued a very comprehensive review of the use of digital and mobile technologies in the response to Sandy.

The document highlights the growing role of social media by official agencies for communications and situational awareness but also pays a great deal of attention to the contribution by the public and digital volunteers to the response efforts.

The efforts of organizations and initiatives such as Humanity Road, Geeks Without Bounds and Occupy Sandy are prominently featured. The work by CrisisCommons volunteers is also noted as the following excerpt indicates:

 

On November 2, 2012, CrisisCommons received a call from the White House asking for assistance. The request and effort focused on collecting and gathering information on various gas maps, but more specifically to:

 Identify information for displaying on maps;
 Look for open standards to connect and share information on maps;
 Create maps and collaborate with other groups;
 Create a complete gas map story;
 Report and validate map information from the public; und
 Determine how the virtual community could contribute to these initiatives.

Uniting technology and crowdsourcing to prevent human rights abuses and genocide

CrisisCommons is proud to highlight the launch of a new online resource by the team behind The Sentinel Project For Genocide Prevention. The online course, called Introduction to Technology for Human Rightshttps://sentinelproject.herokuapp.com/course ) begins on June 10. It has been designed with activists, scholars, human rights defenders, development professionals, and journalists in mind.

The course is also all-online and modestly priced so that it can be accessible to as many people as possible regardless of location and finances.
